Why Danish Heritage Brands Luxury Furniture Takes Time

The Timeless Craftsmanship of Danish Heritage Furniture is well worth the wait.

When it comes to luxury furniture, brands like Fredericia, Eilersen, Carl Hansen and House of Finn Juhl stand out for their dedication to quality and craftsmanship.

Our Heritage brands prioritize quality and longevity above all else, whereas fast furniture brands prioritize flexibility and speed to meet immediate market demands in Singapore. Choosing furniture from Danish heritage brands is an investment in enduring quality and artistry. Each piece reflects a thoughtful, meticulous process that respects tradition and craftsmanship, not speed and volume.

For discerning consumers in Singapore, investing in Danish heritage furniture is more than just purchasing a piece of furniture. It is about acquiring a piece of art that tells a story of tradition, skill, and uncompromising quality. Each piece, whether it's the classic Spanish Chair, the elegant Finn Juhl 45 or character full whisky chair they offers a glimpse into a world where the famous designer was revered and the craftsmanship is valued, and quality is paramount. But why does it take so long to produce these exquisite pieces and get them to Singapore? The answer lies in the meticulous journey that each piece of furniture takes from concept to completion.

Rhiannon HillsWe are often asked why the exquisite furniture from Danish heritage brands like Fredericia, Eilersen, and House of Finn Juhl can take 3-5 months to arrive in Singapore. The answer is that these brands focus on craftmanship and quality. They have dedicated, brand-owned production facilities where skilled craftsmen are at the heart of each piece’s creation. The Heritage brands are low volume producers and value the quality delivery of each piece. So different to the high volume outsourced lifestyle brands who focus on marketing leaving production to outsourced companies - a more Ikea type process. When you choose pieces from heritage brands, you are not just filling a space in your Singapore home you are bringing in a legacy of excellence that endures through time.

Borge Mogensen was an iconic designer who created many renowned pieces during the 1950s and 1960s. His lifelong aim was to make simple furniture that were functional. He believed that while being aesthetically pleasing was important, he believe design should never compromise functionality. His favourite material to work with was wood in various finishes and forms.

One of Mogensen’s most iconic pieces is the Spanish Chair, an interpretation of a traditional type of chair often found in areas influenced by ancient Islamic culture – from Andalusia to northern India.

2 seater sofa designed by House of Finn Juhl for Finn JuhlEach of Finn Juhls iconic designs have a backstory and the Baker Sofa is no different. Edgar Kaufmann Jr, who was a prolific art collector and director of the Industrial Design Department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York found a fast friend in Finn Juhl. He was so intrigued by Finn Juhls worldview on furniture design that he invited the designer to the United States.
The same Art Collector then wrote an article on Finn Juhl, which was then later picked up by Mr. Hollis Baker, the owner of Baker Furniture. Mr. Baker invited Finn Juhl to design a furniture collection for him, which then paved the way to the now exclusive Baker Sofa.

Quality Materials, Carefully Selected

Every element of the furniture, from wood to upholstery, is carefully selected to ensure that only the highest quality materials make it into the final product. This discerning choice of elements is paired with a well-honed production process that values patience and precision. The craftsmanship in each step cannot be hurried or scaled overnight, as it takes years of experience to master the techniques and quality assurance standards that define these brands. Such a commitment to low-volume, long-lasting production results in pieces that not only stand the test of time but often grow in value, becoming cherished heirlooms. This approach is worlds apart from the fast-paced, outsourced production models of larger lifestyle and marketing brands like Bolia and BoConcept. These brands focus on trend-driven, high-volume output by outsourcing production to various manufacturers, where skilled craftsmanship is often secondary to rapid scaling. Unlike heritage brands, which put quality and longevity above all else, fast furniture brands prioritize flexibility to meet immediate market demands, leading to pieces that may lack the durability and timeless appeal that characterize true Danish craftsmanship. It is each piece that matters to these brands, they are proud of their lower volume production leaving the fast furniture approach to the mass market companies.

Danish Design has always been my go-to place for furniture shopping. They have the most fashionable but also timeless pieces. And while some are not cheap they are made with great quality. We bought our favourite dining walnut table that is ever so timeless but also the most versatile being able to sit 6 and up to 10-12 when we extend it. It is our third time renovating and we are taking this favourite piece w us in our move… and more importantly we always get great service from danish design even after many years.
