Trust Your Instincts—Make Your Home Truly Yours, Not Just a Designer's Vision.

Design Your Home: Trust Your Instincts

We work with numerous outstanding designers in Singapore who take the time to truly listen and collaborate with their clients, often creating exceptional homes. Most designers are highly professional, experienced, and capable, so clients are in good hands. However, this trust can sometimes make clients feel less empowered to express their own ideas—especially if their tastes differ from the designer’s vision.

To ensure that your home reflects your vision, it’s essential to follow a few golden rules. Over the years, we’ve developed these insights from working with countless clients and designers, seeing firsthand what leads to truly personal, successful design.

Your Home, Your Vision: Designing your home should start with one essential ingredient: you. No one knows your life, tastes, and personality better than you do. While interior designers bring valuable expertise, some of the best results come from blending this guidance with your instincts and desires. Here’s how to take charge and create a space that feels personal, meaningful, and unmistakably yours.

Start with What Makes You Feel at Home

Think about what brings you comfort and enjoyment. What colors, materials, or styles make you feel calm or inspired? Whether it’s warm woods, neutral palettes, or eclectic patterns, trust these instincts—they are the foundation of a welcoming, authentic home. There’s no “right” way to decorate. The beauty of design lies in its individuality, so let your preferences lead. For me, that’s minimalism, with warm wood against soft off-whites. For others, it might mean incorporating keepsakes or unique accents. One customer even gave pride of place to a wooden barrel—a Singapore family heirloom—in a traditionally Danish-style room, blending heritage with contemporary design.

Blending Designer Tips with Personal Flair

While trusting your instincts is key, a few foundational principles can help balance the room. Think of these as a toolkit that enhances, rather than overrides, your personal vision—especially if working with a designer. • Balance: Keep your space feeling open by balancing large pieces with smaller accents. Pair a statement sofa with a simple coffee table, or create harmony by layering textures in neutral colours. • Colour Harmony: Stick with colours that make you feel at ease. Perhaps start with a neutral base and add accents in shades you naturally gravitate toward. This way, you’ll enjoy your space for years without feeling the need to change the palette. Not sure what your favourite colours are - check out what you prefer to wear! • Lighting: Good lighting transforms a room, so choose lighting that brings out the best in your space. Warm, ambient lighting can create a cozy atmosphere, while brighter lighting in specific areas can make tasks easier and more enjoyable. Layer the lighting so you can create areas and moods. Using these tips as a foundation, explore your creativity! Let your vision come through by adding personal elements—perhaps it’s a piece of art that speaks to you or a vintage chair that brings character. Choose what you want and love - don't be pressured into getting permission each and every time. It must be your space. We had one dear customer who chose gorgeous heirloom pieces from legendary designers and then suddenly would add in something more “rustic” than we approved of – we kept quiet - and now she has an eclectic home that matches her vision and her character.

Choose Only What You Love - Celebrate your self expression

Spaces designed by their owners carry a warmth and authenticity that trends can’t replicate. When you select items with personal resonance, your home grows organically, reflecting your journey. For instance, a set of dining chairs you cherish will bring more joy than twice as many you merely “like.” One of our Danish clients shared a wonderful story: his parents gifted each other a PP Mobler dining chair each Christmas - the 501 Presidents chair - building a cherished collection over time. Now, these chairs will last generations so the parents are happy and the children who will inherit them - eventually - are delighted! So fabulous dining chairs with a heartwarming story to accompany them through the generations.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Making Confident Choices

If you’re feeling a bit uncertain about where to start, here are a few questions to help clarify what you want from your space: 1. What is the main function of this room?: Is it a place for relaxation, entertainment, or work? Your answer will guide your choice of furniture and layout. 2. Which colors make you feel most at home?: Think of the colors you naturally choose, whether in your wardrobe or daily surroundings. These colors can serve as the foundation for your design. 3. Do you have items with sentimental value?: Maybe it’s a vintage mirror from your grandmother or a piece of art you bought on holiday. Incorporate these items to add layers of memory and personality. 4. What mood do you want to create?: For a calm, peaceful space, stick with light neutrals. If you want energy and vibrancy, go for rich, saturated tones that make a bold statement. These questions help you prioritize and focus on what you love, guiding you through the process in a way that feels personal and meaningful. They will help you build the discussion with your designer and collaborate in a way that your vision is implemented.

Embrace Experimentation: Design is a Journey

Designing your home doesn’t have to be about getting everything “perfect” right away. It’s a journey, and your space can evolve over time. Start small, perhaps with a few pieces you’re certain about, and let the rest come together naturally. Give yourself the freedom to experiment with colors, layouts, and textures until the room starts to feel like it belongs to you. We recommend that less truly is more. Choose the sofa and dining table that you love and then wait until you start living in your home to add all other elements. Remember, a beautiful home isn’t about perfection; it’s about warmth, personality, and comfort. There’s beauty in experimenting, in learning what you like and what feels right. Your home is a living, breathing space that can grow and shift just as you do.
