Scandinavian Bedroom: Simple Elegance, Ultimate Comfort.

The key to Scandinavian bedroom design lies in the same approach as Scandinavian design generally. It is a design style that emerged in the 1930s out of a desire to create functional but aesthetically appealing furniture and decor. This focus on functionality without losing a sense of beauty quickly gained traction. This was especially true in the northern areas of Europe, where the long winters with limited daylight made maximising light and comfort a top priority. Simple but classic functionality with exceptional comfort. It can be summarised as form follows function i.e., we need a bedroom to exude calm and the bed to enable us to sleep well and to achieve this with a sense of beauty. This is the Scandinavian way. Further south in Europe, its more what i liek to call " a sports car " approach - lets make it beautiful and amazing to look at, don't worry if we can't use it every day! That approach is best considered as Form Form Form and very much a Southern Europe way - anyone for a red sports car?

So for the ideal bedroom environment, think Scandinavian minimalism focusing on simplicity and functionality but adding warmth, a calm feeling, and beauty. You can achieve this by the use of creamy whites, neutral tans and greys, and soft, nature inspired pastels. Materials used in this style are natural, such as wood, stone, and wool.

So, what are the key steps to a Scandinavian bedroom

  1. Keep it clutter free: Choose a few pieces of classic yet practical furniture which add functionality to the space.
  2. Bring in the natural world : Choose colours and materials that bring the feel of the natural world in and keep the space feeling light: Creams, greys, soft pastelsuse materials such as wood and natural cottons and wool.
  3. Use warm light: Low light for calm and spot light for functionality. Keep the lighting discreet and warm using practical but beautiful lamps that adhere to the minimalist theme while providing soothing light.
  4. Choose less is more: choose elements that are functional and high quality: Truly, less is more. Select well-made classic pieces that deliver what you need - beds that give you better sleep, lights that are timeless, and side cabinets that hold your essentials but don't clutter your space.
  5. What to avoid: Don't overfill the space. Use less, not more. Have a wardrobe that is simple and hides away all your clutter making items. Avoid pieces that are ornate or trendy choose discreet quality to keep the feeling of sophisticated understatement. In this way, your bedroom will be calm with a natural Scandinavian feel.

Pieces that fit well into this design approach are the Dux 1001 and 3003 beds paired with a simple headboard such as the Anna headboard, which gives a simple but classic look. Match with grey linen in the best cotton, layering grey on white for a truly chic and calming look. For bedside cabinets, the Naver AK 2405 provides a great option with good storage and classic looks. Lighting can be achieved using the Birdy Wall, as I do in my own bedroom, simple and functional.

When selecting premium furniture for luxury interiors, consider these key factors:

Artisanal Craftsmanship: Look for pieces that showcase impeccable craftsmanship. Handmade furniture often bears the mark of its creator, reflecting a commitment to quality and elegance. For instance, a handcarved oak bed frame with intricate detailing speaks volumes about the time and skill invested into its creation. Material Quality: Highend furniture should be crafted from the finest materials. Solid hardwoods, luxurious fabrics, and premium metals not only enhance longevity but also exude a sense of opulence. Functionality: Even in luxury interiors, functionality should not be compromised. A bespoke wardrobe with customisable storage solutions or a bed with integrated lighting and charging ports provides both utility and elegance. Timeless Design: Opt for designs that transcend trends. Classic silhouettes and neutral palettes ensure that your furniture remains stylish for years to come. Personalisation: The option to customise furniture to fit your specific needs and tastes is a hallmark of luxury. Whether its a sofa in a bespoke fabric or a dining table tailored to your space, personalisation adds a unique touch.

By following these guidelines, you can create a bedroom that is not only a sanctuary of calm and comfort but also a testament to sophisticated luxury.

Birger Dahl was an award winning Norwegian designer, known fondly by many in the industry as a pioneer of contemporary Scandinavian lighting. The mid-century was the period in which Dahl forged his best-known signature streamlined style and subsequently launched a revolutionary new vision of lighting design. He has received a Gold Medal Award at the prestigious Triennale di Milano for the Dokka Lamp, the first lamp in Norway to achieve this.

Dahl is also firmly recognised as a leading Post-war interior architect using strict geometric shapes softened with gentle contours. His design aesthetic emphasized the purity of form, preferring to highlight the shape of his designs rather than hide them behind decorations or elaborate ornaments. Despite being created decades ago, his lighting work remains as contemporary classics of our time. The Dokka, Birdy and Dahl are among the most iconic lighting furniture pieces for any current Modern home.

Young Finnish designer Hannakaisa Pekkala studied at the Institute of Design Fine Arts in Lahti, Finland. During her education there, Hannakaisa begun studying fine art and product design and fused the two. Her design aesthetic proceeded to develop a contrasting style that combined landscapes from her hometown in Northern Finland with the urban city-dweller lifestyle that is growing in popularity globally.

While Hannakaisa loves experimenting with new materials and design techniques, she also respects the rich tradition of furniture craftsmanship. Her spontaneity as a designer enables her to infuse new life in her designs for Northern Lighting, paying homage to classic Scandinavian creations from her heritage.

What Others Say

★★★★★

My fiancée and I were searching for modern furniture pieces that not only look beautiful but also are practical. Danish Design ticked all the boxes - superb comfort and aesthetics value, a decent variety of different furniture lines, and staff who are willing to take their time to explain the pieces to you. For many of their sofa lines, they have a wide array of different fabrics (and colours) to suit your lifestyle (eg, warmer or cooler materials). We ended up getting a Bolia couch and a Skovby dining table - wish we had gotten more! Definitely will return again

Excellent service from Danish Design CO. Beautiful furniture too. I bought an extendable dining table with lovely wood grain. It enhances the whole room.

★★★★★

Danish Design has always been my go-to place for furniture shopping. They have the most fashionable but also timeless pieces. And while some are not cheap they are made with great quality. We bought our favourite dining walnut table that is ever so timeless but also the most versatile being able to sit 6 and up to 10-12 when we extend it. It is our third time renovating and we are taking this favourite piece w us in our move… and more importantly we always get great service from danish design even after many years.
