Borge Mogensen was an iconic designer who created many renowned pieces during the 1950s and 1960s. His lifelong aim was to make simple furniture that were functional. He believed that while being aesthetically pleasing was important, he believe design should never compromise functionality. His favourite material to work with was wood in various finishes and forms.

One of Mogensen’s most iconic pieces is the Spanish Chair, an interpretation of a traditional type of chair often found in areas influenced by ancient Islamic culture – from Andalusia to northern India.

2. Audacious Cabinet

Audacious is a cabinet with personality designed as a place for displaying your favourite pieces. Greta Grossman (1906 – 1999) only really gained prominence as a designer when Gubi discovered and reproduced her designs. With a career spanning over a forty year period, she was an important designer that influenced many to follow her footsteps in a time period where female designers were few. Grossman drew inspiration from European Modernism and played a key role in defining the aesthetic of mid-Century Californian Modernism.

The most iconic furniture pieces she designed for Gubi would be the Grasshopper floor lamp and the Cobra floor and table lamps. Many of these won design awards and her work was frequently displayed in Sweden museums.

Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou form the Danish design duo known as Space Copenhagen. This studio has been widely known to push design boundaries but still manages to pour in personal vision into their genuine designs. Space Copenhagen’s design portfolio range from interior design, furniture, everyday-use refined objects, art installations and art direction.

Many of their furniture design work have been for clients in the hospitality and luxury retail sector – a field the studio is strongly known for. Space Copenhagen has done interior design for some of the world’s most influential restaurants such as Nordic pioneer restaurant NOMA, Geranium, owned by Bóchuse D’or winner Rasmus Kofoed and newcomer Geist, run by Michelin star chef Bo Bech.

Danish Design ticked all the boxes - superb comfort and aesthetics value, a decent variety of different furniture lines, and staff who are willing to take their time to explain the pieces to you. For many of their sofa lines, they have a wide array of different fabrics (and colours) to suit your lifestyle (eg, warmer or cooler materials). We ended up getting a Bolia couch and a Skovby dining table - wish we had gotten more! Definitely will return again
